Veneta was incorporated as a city in 1962, although it had its roots 100 years ago, when Edmund Hunter settled the area in 1912, according to a history put together by Veneta City Council member Sandra Larson. The 1962 incorporation drive was led by Bill Smigley, who subsequently served for 18 years on the city council and then became a longtime mayor of the city, serving 16 years, from 1980-1996, before stepping down. Smigley was known as “Mr. Veneta.”
The City of Veneta is only about 10 west of the Eugene city limits, in the southwest corner of the Willamette Valley in Lane County, Oregon.
